Some Computing and Internet Terms

Computing and Internet Terms ~

Here's the start of an ongoing list of terms you will find in discussions on and about using the Internet. Eventually, I'll find a way to present an organized (alphabetized) list.....

What is this thing called a “blog?” (coming)

LINK - What is a link?
A link (also called an HTML link, a Hyperlink, or a live link) is a word or phrase or image that appears on a website which contains code (not visible on the current page) for an address someplace on the web.
A link will usually be indicated when a word is bolded and underlined, or colored differently than the surrounding text – or in the case of an image or picture, when your curser touches the hyperlinked object and the arrow changes to a pointing hand. Hyperlinks can point to any resource on the web: an HTML page, an image, a sound file, a movie, etc.

Click on the link and you may be taken to another place on your current page, or directly to another page, or a new page may open in front of the page containing the link, (the page you were just reading.)

Be Aware! Some links may route your browser to a site which is not secure or safe, and which may be malicious. Although hopefully the combination of your anti-virus program and browser settings will warn or block you from arriving at these places.

Links received by email are especially notorious for delivering links to malicious sites. So, whether you know the sender or not – the best practice is to copy that link and paste it into your browser’s address box.

An advanced tip: If you RIGHT CLICK on the link and check the properties – You should be able to see the address of the link, and possibly be able to determine if it’s someplace you might want to explore. See: How to find a link's URL (a web page's address is a URL; a uniform resource locater) without having to click-through to visit a website:
